Trolling spoons are characterized by a minor thickness of the blade, a faster wobbling and a slower sinking rate. They are born for trolling but, during several years of field testing, I discovered that they are one of the most deadly fish catchers in lakes and slow flowing canals if used for casting purpose. The backward fluttering action is exactly the same of casting spoons but with the advantage of an increased residence time inside the cover or over structures. The castability is absolutely not hampered by the blade thickness; in the case of pike fishing, trolling spoons can be easily used with extra heavy rods and 60lb braided line. I strongly suggest to fish them in combination with a solid wire or fluorocarbon tracers instead of multi strands. Trolling spoons are available in two different finish: Hammered and Hex. Nickel plated and brass spoons are highly polished to give that added flash and sparkle in the water. Powder painted versions offer a wide color selection in order to adapt to both light intensity and water color.
In order to be fished inside heavy covers, trolling spoons are armed with a single hook. The dressed version is provided with a double twisted-wire weed guard. The undressed version presents a keeper able to hold in place a soft worm that will protect the lure against the worst of heavy cover.
Spoons can be fished with a Straight retrieve after counting down to the desired depth: a steady retrieve in ideal condition and a slowed down in unfavorable conditions.
The Stop & Go retrieve allows the spoon to wobble and dart erratically. During the stop, the spoon flutters as it sinks. Simply take several reel turns and pause. Most strikes occur on the drop.
The Tumbling retrieve can be considered as a variation of the stop & go. The rod tip should be held high during the reeling portion of the retrieve and the rod tip is dramatically dropped during the stop. The elevated rod tip pulls the spoon upwards over the cover instead of plowing straight through it. This allows the spoon to flutter a greater distance downward and backward, staying for a noticeably longer time in the strike zone. Again, this sinking action is when most strike occur and when line-watching is of utmost importance, especially in the case of bass fishing.
